Groundwork Simulator launch week

Day one of an Early Access launch is a bug hunt. These are the issues players reported on October 22, what actually fixed them, and what is still open.

Quick answer

The big day-one issues are startup crashes, an unresponsive main menu and a stuck gold map; pressing P or closing the map with its X clears the map, and a patch has been announced.

Early Access launch days are bug hunts, and Groundwork Simulator's was no exception. Within hours of the October 22 unlock, the Steam forum had threads for startup crashes, an unresponsive main menu, a stuck gold map, controller mapping problems and dirt falling through a dump truck. The developer has said a patch is coming. Here is what players reported, what worked around it, and what is still open.

The pinned threads, first

Two threads were pinned at the top of the forum on launch day, and both tell you where the developer wants bug traffic to go:

  • "Patch coming soon!" (October 22) — a patch is announced for the launch issues. No date in the thread.
  • "Official Discord — get help, report bugs, drop suggestions here!" (October 22) — the Discord link is the official route for reports, alongside support@groundworksimulator.com on the developer's contact page.

If you are hitting something not listed below, that is where it should go. This page is a fan record of what players found, not an official issue tracker.

What actually fixed things

The honest answer for the crash-on-startup thread is nothing player-side: the thread filled with "same here" replies from people who had reinstalled and verified, which is the signature of a build problem rather than a corrupt install. The patch announcement is the fix, and it is pinned above that thread.

The gold-map issue is the opposite case — a real workaround exists. Players pass around two: press P, or close the map with the X in the top-right instead of Escape. The same P press is what people were told to try when the main menu appeared dead, which suggests the stuck-map overlay is behind more than one complaint.

The pipe question has a clean answer too: right-click the pipe at the pump to disconnect it. If your plant will not release a connection, that is the control.

Controller problems are the most open of the batch

The controller threads are worth reading before you plug a pad in. One player with a PS5 controller reported the horn firing and the driver being ejected once they went above walking pace; another reported the same on Steam Deck; a third with a Thrustmaster and a Logitech wheel said the controls "kinda work but they don't" and that the game showed zero joysticks connected while still receiving input. That is a mapping layer problem, not a hardware problem, and it is not something a player can fix from the settings menu.

The context you should have

The loudest non-bug thread of launch day was about price — whether an Early Access build justifies $19.99. That is a fair argument to have, and the release page lays out exactly what the money buys and what is still roadmap. The other piece of context: several players reported the game running well once it started, including on Linux through Proton, so the failure is not universal.

One more thing worth knowing before you spend an evening troubleshooting: save early and often. Save-anytime is a listed feature, and in a build with crash reports on day one it is the cheapest insurance available.

When it is fixed

The roadmap's Update 1 is already marked in progress, and the patch thread promises a fix for the launch issues without dating it. If you want to know what is coming beyond bug fixes, the Early Access roadmap breaks out all three planned updates. And if you are still on the fence about starting now, the beginner guide will get you through the first session without stepping on the known issues.
